The Abia State Police Command says two officers of the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) have been killed in an attack by suspected militants at Obehie boundary between Rivers and Abia states.
Sources said the incident occurred at about 1:20 a.m. on Sept. 4 when armed men numbering more than 20, in three SUVs concealed behind long trucks, ambushed CTU operatives manning a sandbag checkpoint.
“The operatives engaged the assailants in a gun duel and successfully repelled the attack. Some of the attackers escaped with gunshot wounds.
“Unfortunately, two of our operatives, Inspector Ishaya Audu and Inspector Anthony Emmanuel, paid the supreme price during the encounter. Their rifles were also carted away by the attackers,” said sources.
The sources added that the attackers’ vehicles were riddled with bullets, while tactical teams had been deployed to the area for reinforcement.
The sources said combing and search operations were underway to recover stolen arms and possibly arrest wounded assailants.
The remains of the two slain officers have been deposited at Euro Allied Morgue, Port Harcourt Road, Aba, for preservation.
