Government forces have reportedly seized large quantities of weapons and military equipment from forces identified as members of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) following renewed fighting in parts of Ethiopia’s northern Tigray Region.

According to reports from local sources, the clashes occurred across areas stretching from Maichew to Mekelle, with the TPLF forces reportedly launching an offensive before coming under heavy pressure from government forces.

The reports said the TPLF fighters were forced to retreat from several positions, abandoning significant quantities of weapons and military equipment.

Among the weapons reportedly recovered were machine guns, AK-pattern rifles, 82mm mortars, radio communication equipment, rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launchers, grenades and other assorted military hardware.

The reports claimed that the seizures were made in areas around Maichew and toward Mekelle following the fighting.

However, the exact quantity of weapons recovered and the number of casualties on either side could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.

The reported development comes amid renewed tensions and military activities in the Tigray Region, where the TPLF has historically been a major political and military force.

Further details on the fighting, including the extent of the government forces’ operations and the current security situation around Mekelle, are still emerging.
