The Nigerian Army has taken another step toward improving the welfare and living conditions of its personnel with the commissioning of 120 residential flats and a solar-powered borehole at Ribadu Cantonment, Kotoko Barracks in Kaduna.

The initiative, led by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shu’aibu, underscores a growing emphasis on welfare as a critical pillar of operational effectiveness, morale, and long-term institutional stability.

Represented at the ceremony by the Chief of Administration at Army Headquarters, Maj.-Gen. Isa Abdullah, the COAS said the project reflects the Army’s commitment to its “Soldier First” culture, a policy direction that places the well-being of troops and their families at the centre of leadership priorities.

For many soldiers, accommodation and access to basic amenities remain key factors influencing morale, efficiency, and overall quality of life. In several barracks across the country, ageing infrastructure and inadequate facilities have long posed challenges to personnel and their families.

The newly inaugurated four blocks of flats comprising 120 housing units are expected to significantly ease accommodation pressures within the cantonment, while the 60,000-litre solar-powered borehole will provide a reliable and sustainable source of water.

Military authorities say the project goes beyond infrastructure, representing a deliberate effort to strengthen the bond between leadership and rank-and-file personnel.

“This is a clear demonstration of the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy, which prioritises the welfare and well-being of personnel,” Shu’aibu said during the ceremony.

He described the commissioning as a milestone in the Army’s ongoing welfare programme and a signal of broader interventions planned across formations nationwide.

The COAS also acknowledged the role of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, whose leadership facilitated the successful execution of the project.

He noted that the renovated buildings were previously in a state of disrepair, with some rendered uninhabitable due to leaking roofs and inadequate infrastructure.

Improvements are critical not only for comfort but also for enhancing operational readiness, as well-motivated troops are more likely to perform effectively in demanding and high-risk environments.

The inclusion of a solar-powered water system also reflects a shift toward sustainable solutions within military infrastructure, particularly in areas where public utilities may be unreliable.

Shu’aibu urged the beneficiaries to take ownership of the facilities and ensure proper maintenance, warning against neglect and vandalism.

“Much has been given, and much is expected. Beneficiaries must reciprocate this gesture by taking good care of the accommodation. Proper maintenance will encourage more renovation projects in the near future,” he said.

reacting, soldiers Lauded the COAS for prioritizing on the welfare of troops, noting that it would go along way in alleviating existing accommodation problems.

The development is part of a broader trend within the Nigerian Army to prioritise welfare initiatives alongside operational commitments, with leadership increasingly recognising that the strength of the force is closely tied to the well-being of its personnel.
