A 43-year-old man identified as Terhemen Agbe was on Friday morning lynched by a mob in Mbater Council Ward, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, over allegations of serial criminal activities in the community.
Zagazola Makama gathered that the incident occurred around 6:00 a.m., when members of the community allegedly caught Agbe in the act and attacked him with machetes, leading to his death on the spot.
His brother, Simon Agbe, a resident of GRA 1, Ugba, later reported the incident. Local authorities, including the traditional ruler and the council chairman, confirmed that the deceased had been notorious for various criminal acts in the area and was considered a habitual offender.
Community sources alleged that the mob took matters into their own hands after repeated complaints about his activities yielded no result. Items recovered from the deceased at the scene included a Point of Sale (POS) machine and a screw machine, believed to have been used in his alleged criminal operations.
The scene was visited by investigators and the body was evacuated to the General Hospital mortuary in Logo for post-mortem examination.
Police sources say Investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing is ongoing, as authorities seek to identify those involved in the mob action.
