Niger-Benin Pipeline Targeted in Complex Attack, Heavy Damage Reported
Niamey, Feb. 21, 2025 (NAN) – A section of the Niger-Benin oil pipeline was targeted in a sophisticated attack between the night of Thursday, February 20, and the early hours of Friday, February 21, security sources said.
The assault occurred around 2 a.m. between Muntseka and Kamrey, straddling the Dosso and Tahoua regions, near the Dadinkowa Mosque in northern Niger.
Local sources described the damage as “very significant,†with reports suggesting a well-coordinated assault. Although no group has claimed responsibility, the operational tactics used indicate the possible involvement of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS).
Authorities in Niger have yet to release an official statement on the attack. However, security forces are reportedly assessing the extent of the damage and investigating the perpetrators.
The Niger-Benin pipeline, a critical infrastructure project for oil exports from Niger, has been a strategic target for armed groups operating in the Sahel. The latest attack raises fresh concerns over regional security and the protection of key economic assets.
