Niger Takes Control of Orano’s Mining Subsidiary, Blocks Uranium Exports

The government of Niger has reportedly taken “operational control” of the French uranium mining company Orano’s local subsidiary, Somair.

The decision was announced during an administrative council meeting held on December 3, where Nigerien authorities also refused to allow the subsidiary to export its uranium production.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 4, Orano confirmed the development, describing it as an unexpected move by the Nigerien government.

The statement disclosed that the authorities’ decision effectively places the company’s operations under state control, raising concerns about the future of uranium exports from Niger, a critical supplier to France and other nations.

Niger is one of the world’s leading producers of uranium, a vital resource for nuclear energy. France, in particular, relies heavily on uranium imports from Niger to fuel its nuclear power plants, which generate a significant portion of its electricity.Somair, a joint venture between Orano and Niger’s government, has been a key player in uranium mining in the country.

The recent decision to block exports marks a significant escalation in tensions between Niger and France, particularly in the wake of strained diplomatic relations following the military coup in Niger earlier this year.

The decision also reflects Niger’s growing push for resource sovereignty. It aligns with broader efforts by the junta led government to renegotiate terms with foreign companies and ensure that more benefits from resource exploitation remain within the country.

Orano has not disclosed how it plans to respond to the Nigerien government’s decision but has expressed concern over the disruption to its operations. The company reiterated its commitment to working with local authorities to find a resolution.

Similar moves have been observed in other countries as governments look to maximize revenue and address long-standing grievances about inequitable resource exploitation.
