Niger to Hold National Assizes on Transition Duration February 15-19

The National Assizes of Niger will take place from February 15 to 19 in Niamey to determine the duration of the ongoing transition under the ruling military junta.

A National Commission has been established to oversee the proceedings, following a decree signed on February 8, 2025, by Brigadier General Abdourrahmane Tiani, President of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP).

The commission, chaired by traditional leader Mamoudou Harouna Djingareye, is tasked with drafting a preliminary Transition Charter, making recommendations, and preparing interim and final reports. It consists of former ministers, academics, jurists, military officers, advisers to General Tiani, religious leaders, and civil society representatives.

The commission is divided into five sub-committees, focusing on peace and security, national reconciliation, political and institutional reform, and justice and human rights. Its work will be based on regional consultations conducted across Niger earlier in 2024.

The military government, which seized power in a 2023 coup, remains firmly in control of the transition process. While the Assizes could outline a roadmap for elections and reforms, analysts believe the junta may also use the event to extend its rule rather than commit to a time-bound transition.

Historically, military juntas in the region have prolonged transitions beyond initial promises, raising concerns that the process might be structured to legitimize extended military rule.

The outcome of the National Assizes is expected to shape Niger’s political future, determining whether the country will see a clear return to civilian governance or a prolonged military-led transition.
