Police arrest seven suspected Black Axe cultists, recover firearm, drugs in Imo

Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested seven suspected members of the New Black Movement of Africa, also known as the Black Axe (Aye) confraternity, and recovered a locally fabricated pistol, ammunition and suspected hard drugs during a stop-and-search operation in Owerri.

Police sources told Zagazola Makama that the suspects were intercepted at about 9:00 p.m. on July 24 by operatives attached to the Department of Operations (DOPS) while conducting stop-and-search along the Mbaise–Umuahia Road at Azaraegbelu in Owerri North Local Government Area.

The suspects were identified as Anyanwu Emmanuel, 22, from Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA; Amechi Emmanuel Kelechi, 23, from Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA; Amadi Japhthah, 25, from Ohaji/Egbema LGA; Emmanuel Chibuzor, 24, from Nwangele LGA; Kizito Nkemuakolam, 20, from Njaba LGA; Agulanna Jude, 36, from Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA; and Pascal Ebuka, 20, from Ohaji/Egbema LGA.

During a search of the vehicle, officers recovered a locally fabricated pistol loaded with one live cartridge, as well as a quantity of suspected hard drugs.

Police sources said that during interrogation on July 25, the suspects and the driver allegedly confessed to being members of the New Black Movement of Africa, popularly known as the Black Axe (Aye) cult group.

The suspects further claimed they were travelling to Obowo Local Government Area for the initiation of new members and allegedly admitted involvement in various criminal activities within the state using the recovered firearm in furtherance of cult-related operations.

The police said investigations are ongoing, while efforts have been intensified to arrest other members of the syndicate who remain at large.
