Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested two suspected vandals linked to the destruction of telecommunications infrastructure after foiling an attempt to vandalise an MTN facility in Benin City.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on July 12, following credible information that a gang of suspected armed robbers was vandalising MTN telecommunications equipment along Sapele Road near NEPA in Benin City.
Police operatives swiftly responded to the scene and arrested two suspects identified as Ibrahim Hassan, 19, and Useni (surname yet to be established).
During the operation, Ibrahim Hassan sustained injuries while attempting to escape by scaling a perimeter fence before he was apprehended. Police recovered one cutlass and one dagger from the suspects.
Investigations further revealed that the same group had allegedly attempted to vandalise the MTN facility on July 9, but fled after sighting police operatives.
In that earlier incident, the suspects abandoned 12 heavy-duty batteries belonging to MTN and a Toyota Yaris with registration number ABD 451 KK. The vehicle’s driver, Yahaya Saliu, 29, was arrested and remains in police custody.
Police sources added that the second suspect, Useni, was attacked by an angry mob before officers could fully secure the scene, leaving him with severe head injuries.
Both suspects are currently receiving treatment at a cottage hospital under police guard, while preliminary investigations continue to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal gang.
The Edo State Police Command said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
