The Nigerian army troops of Sector 3 Operation Hadin Kai deployed to Malam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, have repelled a probing attack launched by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in the town, killing several of the insurgents during a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Zagazola Makama report that the attempted infiltration occurred at about 9:10 p.m. on Wednesday, when troops on protection duty for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the area came under fire from an unspecified number of Boko Haram fighters.
According to the sources, the troops, backed by auxiliaries and operating under the code-named “Operation Sand Fury,” responded with superior firepower, forcing the terrorists to retreat after suffering heavy casualties.
Security alert was previously issued by conflict tracker Zagazola Makama, warning of a planned attack by the Bakoura faction of Boko Haram following a reported gathering of commanders in Tumboun Gini.
“Several terrorists were killed during the encounter while others fled with bullet wounds,” a military officer familiar with the situation said. “One soldier sustained gunshot wounds but no fatalities were recorded on the side of the troops.”
The contact ended around 9:25 p.m. after about 15 minutes of intense fighting. Calm has since returned to the area, although troops remain on red alert to ward off any follow up attacks.
The sources said that a follow up exploitation operation by frontline troops and local intelligence operatives is ongoing to clear any remaining threats and secure the area.
The Nigerian Army has continued to intensify its counterterrorism operations across the North-East as part of efforts to fully dismantle all terror groups threatening national security.
