President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deploying emerging technologies and strengthening the capacity of the Armed Forces to effectively tackle Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

The President made the commitment on Monday at the Grand Finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 and the maiden African Land Forces Forum (ALFF), held at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu said his administration was modernising the nation’s military through sustained investments in advanced military hardware, technology, intelligence capabilities and personnel development to improve operational planning and combat readiness.

The event, organised by the Nigerian Army in collaboration with the African Land Forces Forum, was themed: “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army.”

According to the President, the Federal Government remains resolute in defeating terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other emerging security threats through intelligence-driven and technology-enabled military operations.

“My administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces, thereby improving operational planning and combat readiness,” he said.

Tinubu stated that beyond procuring modern equipment, his administration was prioritising research and development to promote indigenous defence technologies capable of addressing Nigeria’s peculiar security needs.

He said revitalising the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) remained central to the government’s efforts to strengthen local defence production, reduce dependence on foreign military equipment and create skilled employment opportunities.

According to him, although previous administrations made efforts to revive DICON, his administration is determined to reposition the corporation as a strategic pillar for military self-reliance.

The President noted that a vibrant local defence manufacturing industry would not only enhance the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces but also reinforce Nigeria’s strategic independence in addressing contemporary security threats.

He also described the African Land Forces Forum as a landmark initiative that would deepen defence diplomacy, facilitate the exchange of military expertise and promote regional cooperation among African armies.

Tinubu commended Great Minds Event Management for partnering with the Nigerian Army to organise the forum, saying the initiative would strengthen Nigeria’s leadership in defence collaboration across the continent while creating opportunities for innovation and economic growth within the defence sector.

The President paid glowing tribute to officers and personnel of the Armed Forces, describing them as symbols of patriotism, sacrifice and professionalism whose contributions extended beyond Nigeria’s borders.

“Our Armed Forces remain a model of selfless service to the people and a source of pride across the African continent.

“Their devotion to neutralising threats in this part of the world extends beyond our borders. It becomes a real contribution to global security, peace and stability,” he said.

He also honoured fallen military personnel who paid the supreme sacrifice in defence of the nation’s unity and sovereignty.

“Their sacrifices will not be in vain, and their families will not be forgotten.

“Their courage lives in the freedom we breathe, and the families they left behind remain a sacred responsibility of this nation,” Tinubu added.

The President further commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for his visionary leadership in organising the joint event, noting that it had successfully promoted strategic dialogue, innovation and stronger defence partnerships across Africa.

In his remarks, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, described the hosting of the event in Port Harcourt as a reflection of the prevailing peace and stability in the state.

Fubara said the successful hosting of military leaders and dignitaries from across Africa contradicted negative narratives about Rivers State and underscored its readiness to host major national and international events.

He commended the Nigerian Army for its sacrifices in preserving Nigeria’s unity and urged the Federal Government to further improve the welfare, working conditions and wellbeing of military personnel.

Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Shaibu, reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and protecting the lives and property of citizens.

He said the theme of the 2026 celebration reflected the Army’s enduring commitment to its constitutional responsibilities despite the increasingly complex and dynamic security environment.

According to him, emerging threats have continued to reshape military operations, requiring the Army to constantly adapt its strategies, strengthen intelligence capabilities and enhance operational effectiveness.

Shaibu commended officers and soldiers serving across various theatres of operation for their resilience, courage and professionalism in confronting insecurity.

He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his continued support to the Nigerian Army and pledged the loyalty and commitment of officers and soldiers to the Constitution and the Commander-in-Chief.

The ceremony featured the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Awards, military drills, tactical demonstrations and colourful displays by various units and formations of the Nigerian Army.

Among dignitaries at the event were former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd); former President Olusegun Obasanjo; members of the National Assembly; Deputy Governors of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, Sen. Akon Eyakenyi and Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, respectively; Minister of Defence, Lt.-Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd); Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu; Chief of Defence Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke; former service chiefs and other senior military officers.
