Troops of 73 Battalion (Motorised), in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force, have arrested five suspected vigilantes following an incident of alleged reckless discharge of firearms during a wedding celebration in the Ngomari area of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.

Security sources said the incident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on April 4, 2026, when members of a vigilante group reportedly attached as escorts to the Chairman of Kala-Balge Local Government Area allegedly fired sporadically into the air during a celebration.

A stray bullet was said to have struck a civilian at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) staff quarters, resulting in his death.

Troops and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force were mobilised to the scene, where five suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.

The suspects have since been handed over to the Nigeria Police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Authorities said efforts are ongoing to ensure accountability and prevent the misuse of firearms during public gatherings.
