Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested two suspected gunmen in possession of illegal firearms at Gigina village in Dutsi Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Security sources said the suspects were apprehended at about 4:15 p.m. on March 19 by troops of 171 Battalion deployed at Chinese Company location.

According to the sources, the arrest followed reports of gunshots in the area, which caused panic among residents of the community.

“The troops responded promptly and apprehended the suspects after they were found in possession of weapons,” the source said.

Items recovered from the suspects include two Dane guns, two daggers and two mobile phones.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspects claimed to be hunters from Kwaram Tama and Shinkafi communities in Katsina State, but the claims could not be verified.

The sources said the suspects, along with the recovered items, had been handed over to the Divisional Police Station in Daura for further investigation and necessary action.

They added that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and ensure public safety across the state.
