Troops of the Nigerian Army have intercepted a vehicle conveying suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, during an anti-illegal bunkering operation in Akwa Ibom State.

Security sources disclosed that the operation was carried out at about 2:30 p.m. on June 7 along the Eket–Etinan road in Etinan Local Government Area of the state.

According to the sources, troops of 6 Battalion intercepted the vehicle while conducting routine operations aimed at curbing illegal petroleum-related activities in the Niger Delta region.

The suspect conveying the product reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled upon sighting the troops.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 40 bags containing approximately 1,200 litres of suspected illegally refined AGO.

The recovered vehicle and petroleum products were subsequently secured and handled in accordance with established operational procedures.

Security officials said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to combat crude oil theft, illegal refining and other forms of economic sabotage in the region.

They reiterated the commitment of security agencies to protecting critical national assets and disrupting criminal networks involved in illicit petroleum activities.

Authorities also urged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in identifying and apprehending individuals engaged in illegal bunkering and related offences.
