Troops of the Nigerian Army have intercepted a vehicle conveying a large quantity of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, during an anti-illegal bunkering operation in Bayelsa State.
Security sources said the interception occurred at about 1:00 p.m. on June 6 along the Oruma–Kolocreek road in Ogbia Local Government Area.
According to the sources, troops of 16 Brigade Garrison, while conducting routine anti-illegal bunkering operations, intercepted a vehicle loaded with approximately 1,150 litres of AGO concealed in 23 sacks.
The suspect conveying the product reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene upon sighting the troops.
The troops subsequently secured the vehicle and the petroleum products.
Security officials said the recovered items were handled in accordance with established operational guidelines under ongoing efforts to curb illegal bunkering and related economic sabotage in the Niger Delta region.
The operation forms part of sustained military efforts to protect critical oil and gas infrastructure and disrupt illicit activities linked to crude oil theft and illegal refining.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to combating economic crimes in the region and urged residents to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in identifying and apprehending individuals involved in illegal bunkering activities.
