Troops have recovered a large number of rustled livestock following a foiled attempt by armed criminals along the Polewire–High Tension–Gidan Duna axis in Kaduna State.

Security sources said the incident occurred when troops deployed at Forward Operating Base Doka, with support from CCTV surveillance, observed armed men moving suspected rustled cattle on foot and motorcycles.

The sources disclosed that the troops immediately mobilised to intercept the suspects, but the armed men fled into the surrounding forest upon sighting the advancing troops.

According to the sources, the troops pursued the suspects but made no contact, after which they combed the general area and recovered three motorcycles and a number of livestock, including cows, goats, and rams.

They added that traditional and community leaders, including the Hakimin Doka and Ardo, were contacted to assist in identifying the recovered animals for possible return to their rightful owners.

The sources further revealed that officials of the Kaduna State Livestock Regulatory Agency, led by Dr. Suleiman Salisu, arrived at the base on April 29 to formally take custody of the recovered animals.

They noted that a total of 237 cows and 284 sheep and goats were eventually handed over to the agency on April 30, with officials stating that sheep and goats were counted jointly due to difficulties in separation at the scene.

The sources said efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle criminal networks involved in livestock rustling in the area.
