The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede , on Wednesday said the Nigerian Army would mark its 162nd anniversary with a renewed focus on soldier welfare, innovation, and civil-military collaboration.
Speaking at the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2025 press briefing held at the Army Headquarters Conference Room in Abuja, Lagbaja said this year’s theme, “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army’s Transformation Drive,” was aimed at repositioning the force for enhanced operational effectiveness.
The celebration, scheduled to culminate on July 6, commemorates the establishment of the Nigerian Army and the symbolic firing of the first shot at Garkem, in present-day Cross River State, marking the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War.
Oluyede noted that the Nigerian Army, which traces its origins to the “Glover Hausas” formed in 1863, has grown into a formidable force, having played significant roles in global and regional peacekeeping, the Nigerian Civil War, and current counter-terrorism operations.
“This year, the Nigerian Army is celebrating 162 years of selfless dedication, patriotism and loyalty to the defence of our nation,” the Army Chief said.
He reaffirmed the Army’s resolve to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the nation against internal and external threats, adding that NADCEL 2025 serves as a platform to showcase achievements and deepen collaboration with stakeholders.
Oluyede outlined the activities lined up for the week-long event, including the commissioning of civil-military projects in Kaduna State, free medical outreach, school visits, a charity outreach by the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association, a golf tournament, and a lecture at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
He also announced the grand finale on July 6, which will feature a military parade, equipment display, and presentation of the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award to outstanding personnel.
The COAS appreciated the media for its sustained partnership and pledged continued transparency and cooperation in promoting national security narratives.
“We reaffirm our commitment to maintaining cordial working relationships with you, other security stakeholders and all well-meaning Nigerians,” he added.
