Grand Unveiling of the Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja Recreational Park at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, Plateau State
A new dawn of recreation and community spirit has burst forth with the official opening of the Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja (MAL) Recreational Park at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment. The occasion was graced by distinguished guests, including the General Officer Commanding and Commander of Operation Safe Haven, who lauded the initiative as a significant leap forward for the well being of military families and the surrounding community.
This ambitious project was brought to life by the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA) under the leadership of Mrs. Fibishola Abubakar, Chairperson of NAOWA 3 Division, and is named in honor of Mrs. Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja, the esteem former NAOWA President who laid its foundation on November 23, 2023.
In his speech during the commissioning ceremony, the General Officer Commanding expressed immense pride, stating, “Today, we gather not only to unveil a remarkable recreational park but to celebrate the spirit of togetherness that defines our military community.
This park is a testament to our unwavering commitment to enhance the quality of life for our troops and their families.”
Highlighting the importance of recreation, he noted that the nearest facility was over 30 minutes away, making the creation of this park both timely and essential for promoting relaxation and family bonding.
“In times of service, our soldiers often face immense challenges that can weigh heavily on their spirits. This park is designed to be a respite a place where families can come together, unwind, and rejuvenate,” he remarked.
The MAL Recreational Park is a vibrant oasis offering a range of attractions for families and individuals. The park boasts an impressive array of attractions designed to cater to families of all ages. Featured facilities include a sparkling swimming pool, a synthetic 5-a-side football pitch, trampolines, bouncing castles, electric merry go-round trains, bicycles, and swings.
The park’s facilities, which include mini pavilions, gazebos, and eateries serving treats like pizza, popcorn, and shawarma, are floodlit to ensure maximum usability, even at night. Designed to serve not just the barracks but also neighboring communities like Jebu Bassa, Dutsen Kura, Miango, and Jos town, the park reduces the burden of long travel for recreation and strengthens the bond between the military and its surrounding populace.
Battery powered bikes and floodlit sports courts for basketball, lawn tennis, volleyball, and handball are also among the offerings, all set within beautifully landscaped surroundings. Eateries providing various treats, alongside ample parking space, ensure that every visit is enjoyable and convenient.
As night falls, the park transforms into a magical setting with beautiful illumination, inviting families to create cherished memories under the stars. “At night, this park will become a vibrant hub of laughter and joy,” the General Officer Commanding added, “a place where the glow of community spirit shines brightly, reminding us that together, we can overcome any challenge.”
The event also served to honour the legacy of the late Lt. Gen. TA Lagbaja, the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, whose contributions to the military and the Plateau State community remain indelible. “We remember Gen. Lagbaja not only for his service but for his belief in the importance of community and welfare. This facility serves as a tribute to his enduring legacy,” the General Officer Commanding stated.
He expressed profound gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff for his unwavering support, emphasizing, “Today’s event is made possible by the dedication of many individuals committed to improving the lives of our troops and their families. I thank the Chief of Army Staff for his continuous support and for equipping our division with the resources necessary to carry out our mission effectively.”
In closing, the General Officer Commanding urged military families to embrace the park as a space for connection and community engagement. “Let this park be a place where friendships flourish, where children grow, and where cherished memories are made,” he encouraged.
“We must remember that while our soldiers protect our nation, it is our duty to nurture their families, ensuring they experience happiness and support in their daily lives.”
