Nigerian troops serving under Operation AWATSE Peace Assistance Assignment II (OPAA II) in Benin Republic joined other Muslim faithful to observe Eid-el-Kabir prayers and subsequently carried out confidence-building patrols as part of efforts to enhance security and strengthen civil-military relations.

Security sources told Zagazola that the troops observed the Eid prayer at about 9:05 a.m. at the prayer ground within Tobgin Camp, Cotonou.

The sources said the religious observance was conducted peacefully and formed part of activities marking the Eid-el-Kabir celebration by the contingent.

In a related development, troops of OPAA II, in conjunction with personnel of the Benin National Guard, conducted a joint confidence-building night patrol between May 27 and May 28 across strategic locations within Cotonou.

The patrol covered key routes and areas including QRF Tobgin Camp, Centre Ville, Point M King, Cadjehoun, Boulevard de la Marina, Place de l’Amazone, Houenoussou and Fidjrossè.

According to the sources, the exercise was aimed at enhancing security, reassuring residents and strengthening cooperation between Nigerian and Beninese security forces.

“No unusual occurrence was observed or reported during the patrol,” the sources said.

As part of the Eid celebrations, a Sallah luncheon was later organised for the troops at Tobgin Camp.

The event was attended by the Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Amb. Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim, who was received by the Contingent Commander, Lt.-Col. A.A. Ikoro.

Also present were the Defence Attaché in Cotonou, Col. S.A. Yahaya, who represented the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), officials of the Nigerian Embassy, the Beninese Quick Reaction Force Commander and representatives of the Benin Presidential Guard.

Highlights of the event included the delivery of the Chief of Army Staff’s Eid-el-Kabir message, an interactive session with troops and the donation of a cow to the contingent by the Nigerian Ambassador.

The event ended peacefully, with military authorities commending the troops for their professionalism and commitment to regional peace and security operations.

The sources added that the activities further strengthened the cordial relationship between Nigerian forces and their Beninese counterparts while boosting the morale of personnel deployed on the mission.
