One person has been killed following an attack by suspected Fulani bandits on Tanjol community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, while troops responding to the incident were later confronted by angry youths and women in the area.

Security sources told Zagazola that the troops of Sector 6, Operation Enduring Peace, deployed at Dakku, responded to a distress call at about 6:18 p.m. on May 18, 2026, following reports of an attack on the community.

According to the sources, the troops arrived at the scene and discovered the lifeless body of one Daniel Danladi, while the assailants had already fled before the arrival of security operatives.

The sources said tension escalated shortly after as some women and youths in the community allegedly became hostile towards the troops, accusing them of compromising with Fulani militias.

The troops were said to have professionally managed the situation and tactically withdrew from the area to avoid further escalation of violence.

Sources noted that the development reflected a growing and dangerous trend in some conflict-affected communities where troops responding to distress situations come under hostility from residents shortly after attacks by armed groups.

The sources added that in several cases, troops who withdraw to prevent clashes with civilians are later accused of abandoning the communities they were deployed to protect.

Security authorities said efforts were ongoing to de-escalate tensions in the area and track down the fleeing attackers.
