A police officer was injured and a civilian killed during a late-night attack by gunmen on security personnel stationed at a checkpoint in Kadarko, a border community between Nasarawa and Benue states.

Zagazola Makama gathered that the incident occurred at about 10:55 p.m. on July 9, when the officers on night pin-down duty at Rest House, Kadarko, came under heavy fire from assailants suspected to be armed herders.

During the attack, Inspector Sunday Apochi sustained gunshot wounds to his left thigh and hand. He was promptly rescued from the scene by a backup team and was found with his service rifle (AK-47) intact.

However, a yet-to-be-identified civilian was reportedly killed by a stray bullet during the exchange of gunfire.

The injured officer has been transferred to the University Teaching Hospital, Lafia, where he is currently receiving treatment and responding positively. The body of the deceased civilian has been deposited at the hospital mortuary for identification and autopsy.

Security has been reinforced in the area, and investigations are ongoing to track down the perpetrators of the attack.
