Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected arms supplier and recovered five locally fabricated AK-47 rifles during an intelligence-led operation in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the operation was carried out at about 5:00 p.m. on July 1 by troops of the 223 Battalion following credible human intelligence on the activities of a suspected illegal arms supplier.

The sources said the troops conducted a fighting patrol to Kotonkoro Village, where the suspect was successfully apprehended.

During the operation, the troops recovered five locally fabricated AK-47 rifles believed to have been intended for criminal elements operating within the area.

The suspect and the recovered firearms are currently in military custody for further investigation and necessary action.

Military sources said the operation forms part of sustained intelligence-driven efforts to dismantle illegal arms supply networks and deny terrorists and bandits access to weapons in the North-Central region.

The sources added that troops have continued aggressive operations across the theatre to curb the proliferation of illicit firearms and enhance security in vulnerable communities.
