Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have arrested a suspected military impersonator and recovered suspected illicit drugs and other items during an intelligence-led operation in Gwazari High Court area of Borno State.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the suspect, identified as Sadiq Bukar, was arrested at about 2:55 p.m. on June 25 by troops of the 73 Battalion following a tip-off from residents on the presence of notorious criminals in the area.
The sources said two other suspects escaped before the arrival of the troops.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect possessed some military knowledge. A search of his mobile phone reportedly uncovered photographs and videos showing him dressed in military camouflage with an AK-47 rifle.
During interrogation, Bukar claimed he was a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) under a commander identified as Saminu and was previously deployed to Malali in Monguno Local Government Area.
However, investigations by the troops indicated that he had left the area a long time ago.
The suspect also claimed to be an informant for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), but officials of the agency reportedly stated that they had only engaged him on a single occasion several years ago.
Items recovered from the suspect included one Infinix mobile phone, a wristwatch, an MP3 player and three wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, among other personal effects.
Security sources said the suspect is also being investigated over allegations of extorting shop owners while dressed in military uniform, following complaints from traders about the activities of military impersonators operating in the area.
The suspect remains in military custody as investigations continue to determine the full extent of his activities and identify possible accomplices.
