Troops of 17 Brigade Operation FANSAN YANMA have neutralised a suspected terrorist and recovered arms during a joint operation with the Katsina State Community Watch Corps in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Security sources disclosed that the operation was conducted on May 27 following credible intelligence on plans by terrorists to attack troops and civilians during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
The troops, deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Matazu, reportedly mobilised a fighting patrol and laid ambush along the Sayaya road where the terrorists were expected to pass through.
According to the sources, contact was established after the terrorists sighted the troops and opened fire.
However, the troops responded with superior firepower and neutralised one of the suspects during the exchange.
The neutralised suspect was identified as Mau’re, said to be a foot soldier loyal to a notorious terrorist kingpin, Muhammadu Filani.
Following the encounter, troops reportedly exploited the area and recovered one AK-47 rifle, a magazine loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition, and one motorcycle.
Military authorities said the operation was successful and no casualty was recorded among security personnel.
The sources added that troops remained committed to sustaining offensive operations and ensuring adequate protection of lives and property across Katsina State, particularly during the festive period.
