Troops of 1 Brigade Quick Response Force (QRF) have repelled a terrorist attack in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, recovering weapons and ammunition during a gun battle with the assailants.
Security sources said the incident occurred at about 4:00 p.m. on May 16, 2026, when troops responded to reports of a terrorist attack on Illela village.
According to the sources, the troops made contact with the armed attackers shortly after arriving at the community, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The troops reportedly neutralised an unspecified number of the terrorists during the encounter, forcing others to flee.
Items recovered from the scene included one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), one AK-47 rifle, one extra magazine, 211 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm ammunition and five rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
The sources added that tyres of a CSK Armoured Personnel Carrier used during the operation were damaged in the course of the firefight.
Security authorities said troops continued domination patrols within the general area to track fleeing terrorists and prevent further attacks on surrounding communities.
