A candlelight procession organised in memory of late Mr Ifesinachi Onyekere, the son of an All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) women leader, was held in Awka on Tuesday amid heavy security deployment, the police have said.
Sources confirmed that the procession, led by popular activist Mr Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as Very Dark Man, took place without the consent of the deceased’s family.
Onyekere, who was the Managing Director of Fish Magnet, was shot in the leg and abducted by unknown gunmen on July 27 at Ezinifite, Okpuno.
He later died in captivity from the gunshot wound.
Security sources said the activist and his group were cautioned against inciting public anger, violence, or conduct likely to lead to a breakdown of law and order in the state.
The procession reportedly commenced at Aroma Junction, moved through Amiyi to Awka–Isiagu bypass, and returned to Aroma Junction where it ended at about 6:30 p.m.
No incident of violence was recorded, and the convener has since departed the state.
Security during the event was fortified by a joint team of police, other security agencies, and local vigilantes.
