Motorcyclist Killed After Hitting Suspected Boko Haram IED in Niger-Kogi Border Area

A motorcyclist has been killed after his Bajaj motorcycle reportedly ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram terrorists in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident occurred at about 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, while the victim, identified as Usman Machiya of Gyada village, was travelling towards Baturen-Daji in Babanna District.
According to a security source, Machiya was riding a Bajaj motorcycle from Gyada village via Baturen-Daji when he encountered the suspected IED planted along the route.
The explosive device detonated, killing him instantly.
The incident was subsequently reported to the appropriate security authorities, while military troops at the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Babanna, were alerted.
Other security agencies in the area were also placed on red alert following the explosion.
Security personnel are maintaining heightened surveillance in the area to prevent further casualties and determine whether additional explosive devices may have been planted along the route.
Monitoring of the situation is ongoing.
