One killed in clash between farm guards, attackers in Gombe village

A violent confrontation between watermelon farm guards and unidentified attackers in Kurjele village, Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, has left one person dead.
Zagazola Makama gathered that the incident occurred on July 4 at about 7:20 p.m., when three young men hired to protect watermelon farms in the area were attacked by a group of eight men armed with cutlasses and sticks.
A sources said that the guards, including a 23-year-old identified as Hafizu Abubakar, were reportedly contracted by local farmers to prevent encroachment and destruction of their cultivated crops.
Trouble began when the armed group stormed the farms, allegedly destroying parts of the cultivated watermelon fields. In a bid to repel the attack, Abubakar reportedly fired a locally made dane gun, hitting one of the intruders. Both Abubakar and the injured attacker sustained injuries during the clash.
Community members and local vigilantes rushed to the scene and evacuated the injured individuals to the Primary Healthcare Centre in Kurjele.
Police operatives from Jara Outstation, in collaboration with local vigilantes, visited the scene and evacuated the victims to the Primary Healthcare Centre in Kurjele village.
The injured attacker, later identified as Rilwanu Alhaji Idi of Kurjele village, was referred to the General Hospital in Deba, where he was confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor.
His body was photographed and subsequently released to his relatives for burial upon request.
