Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have intensified clearance operations in Gero Hills, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, following an attack that left six local residents dead.
Security sources said the troops conducted a clearance operation in the area at about 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, when they sighted herders with a large number of cattle fleeing from the hills.
The sources said the troops pursued the fleeing herders, but they escaped in different directions towards Miango, using obstacles in the terrain to evade arrest.
During the operation, the troops combed the general area and recovered two motorcycles, while destroying makeshift camps discovered during the clearance.
The troops are currently maintaining a presence in the area to prevent further attacks, while a manhunt for the fleeing herders continues.
The operation followed the reported killing of six residents in Gero community, an incident that has heightened security concerns in the area.
Security sources said the ongoing operations were aimed at tracking down those responsible for the attack, preventing further violence and restoring confidence among residents.
Authorities have continued to urge residents to provide credible information to security agencies while avoiding reprisals that could escalate tensions between communities.
