Suspected Mwaghavu Militia have killed four cattle belonging to a Fulani herder in an attack in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, prompting security forces to intensify efforts to prevent a reprisal.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 5:58 p.m. on Aug. 2, when troops of Sector 8, Sub-Sector 81 of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) deployed at Gyambwas responded to a distress call over an attack on cattle.
The sources said the cattle, belonging to Sanusi Abdullahi, were attacked while drinking water at a river located between Gaude and Aloghom villages in Mangu LGA.
On reaching the scene, the troops discovered that four cows had been killed, while parts of the carcasses had been butchered and taken away by the attackers, who fled before the arrival of security personnel.
Security sources said preliminary findings indicated that the attackers were suspected to be Mwaghavu youths, although investigations are ongoing to establish their identities and motives.
Following the incident, troops immediately commenced engagements with critical stakeholders, including community leaders, to de-escalate tensions and prevent retaliatory violence.
Security forces have also intensified efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible, while maintaining heightened patrols in the area to forestall further attacks.
