By Zagazola Makama
Troops of Sector 8, Operation ENDURING PEACE, have foiled separate armed fulani attacks and rescued a wounded local during operations in Manja Village and Manja Forest in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The first incident occurred at about 1610 hours on Aug. 28, when troops deployed at Manja under Operation HARD KNOCK responded to information about the movement of armed persons accompanying cattle into the community.
According to military sources, the suspected armed herders opened fire when troops arrived at the location.
The troops responded with superior firepower, forcing the attackers to withdraw in disarray into the surrounding bushes with their cattle.
The troops subsequently dominated the general area through sustained fighting patrols to prevent the attackers from regrouping or launching further attacks.
In a related incident at about 1745 hours the same day, troops responded to another report of an isolated attack on locals at Manja Forest.
The troops’ quick intervention reportedly forced the gunmen to flee the area.
During the subsequent exploitation of the location, the troops rescued a native identified as Mr Markus Yonpus, who had sustained a gunshot wound.
The victim was evacuated to a cottage hospital in Qua’an Pan Local Government Area for medical attention.
Troops have continued fighting patrols across Manja and adjoining areas as part of efforts to secure the community, protect residents and prevent further attacks.
The latest operations form part of the ongoing security efforts by Operation ENDURING PEACE to deny armed groups freedom of action and maintain stability across vulnerable communities in Plateau State.
