Troops restore order after attempted sexual assault triggers communal clashes in Bayelsa

Troops of 5 Battalion have restored calm in Ekewe Community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, following clashes sparked by an alleged attempted sexual assault.
Security sources said that at about 2:30 a.m., information received indicated that a civilian had attempted to rape a minor, leading to the suspect being beaten to death by community members.
The incident quickly escalated into factional clashes, arson, and a breakdown of law and order.
On arrival, the troops found youths attempting to vandalize and set ablaze the house of the community’s paramount ruler.
The soldiers intervened to prevent further destruction and restored normalcy in the area. The corpse of the deceased was handed over to the Nigeria Police for further action, while troops continue to dominate the community to prevent any recurrence.
