Trump designates Nigeria as country of concern over alleged killings of Christians

U.S. President Donald Trump has designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over what he described as an existential threat to Christians in the country.

Trump made the announcement on Friday in a post on his Truth Social platform, alleging that thousands of Christians were being killed in Nigeria by what he called “radical Islamists” responsible for “mass slaughter.”

According to him, about 3,100 Christians have been killed in Nigeria in recent times.

The  president said he had directed Congressman Riley Moore and the Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Tom Cole, to investigate the situation and submit a report to him.

“The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other countries,” Trump wrote.

“We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world,” he added.

The Nigerian government has not yet responded to the statement.
